No-one really knows if the composer Frederic Chopin was born on 22 February or 1 March 1810. The Poles simply celebrate the entire week, and 2013 marks the 203rd birthday of ‘their’ Fryderyc; whilst he was born in Warsaw, he spent time in the country of his father’s birth, France, where he died in 1849 (though his heart was removed and preserved in cognac in Poland, according to his wishes). In any case, it’s a good opportunity to make his classical music more popular around Poland again. The spirit of Chopin is mediatised all over the country; there was the 2009 poster showed the composer wearing an adidas-style tracksuit or in a football shirt with the mermaid of Warsaw as a goalkeeper. In 2013 though, it’s the shopping centres which promoted his waltzes and mazurka folk dances through mini live concerts
