Just a short while ago the Italians clutched their stomachs in laughter because of the antics of their prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. Even British Queen Elizabeth II could only shake her head as the cavalier called out at ‘Mister Obamaaa’ during a group photo shoot in 2009. This time it was the turn of German chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Nicolas Sarkozy. At the EU-summit about saving the common European currency on Sunday 23 October, one French journalist asked about the results of talks with the Italian prime minister, only to see Sarkozy's lips twitch and both politicians let out a snort of laughter. The room chuckled. However, Italy won't be laughing along, as the EU summit placed particular pressure on the country to get rid of its mountains of debt more quickly in future
