A few years back we at Paris HQ were giggling ferociously at the likes of our European politicians speaking in foreign languages with dismaying accents. So it tickled us some more to come across this video of English footballer Joey Barton, and to hear how being on loan with Olympic Marseille FC in southern France has influenced the 30-year-old's northern accent. The media in Britain enjoyed the press conference moment, pointing to similarities when manager Steve McClaren spoke with a jarringly Dutch accent during his time coaching in The Netherlands, as well as making popular cultural references to the popular TV show 'Allo 'Allo!, which featured bad French accents heavily. In the UK the number of students taking European languages at A-level is in decline, with applications to study French falling by a third since 2000, so mockery may just remain the status quo concerning foreign tongues - and accidental accents
