Plastic fantastic: EU driving licence launched on 19 January

New European driving licences will be issued according to a new credit-card style format; currently, more than 300 million drivers across the EU use a variation of paper and plastic models. Of all the great details of the new unified driving licence (such as the optional microchip), its comparison with a bank card perfectly defines the climate of privatisation that is sweeping Europe in its fifth year of the crisis. In the ‘one Europe, one driving licence’ video released by the European commission, a series of walking ID cards and official documents from the 27 EU member states attend a fictional catwalk show to unveil the new EU driving licence. It’s funny, but why make the walking Dutch passport the spoilsport of the party – and where does the punchbowl come from that it accidentally drops in the first twelve seconds of the advert? For an advert about harmony in the EU, it’s less than harmonious with its pointers
