Madrid protests: faces of an October revolution

15 October 2001: ‘Indignados en Madrid’, by ©Lucille Caballero/ lucillecaballero.com/, ©Marta Arias

Madrid’s central square, the Plaza de Puerta de Sol, was proclaimed ‘full’ (‘lleno’) over loudspeakers at around 9pm on Saturday 15 October. It’s not a first for the emblematic site of what began as a European revolution and has quickly caught fire to become a global one. 15 October saw the ‘indignant movement’ take place for over 80 countries worldwide, as people stepped out onto their own ‘Puertas del Sol’ and ‘made change happen’. I was there. Sol was even more packed with people than 15-M. It was an amazing demonstration of the people of Madrid. The video is correct, but in my opinion it does not show the rage of the participants. It was a peaceful demonstration but people did not stop crying and protesting until 11 pm (since 6pm). Frustation and no-resignation was so strong that could be touched. in the air. 500,000 people. Taking into account that after 11-M terrorist attacks demonstrators in Madrid were up to 1,500,000, we could say is really a huge number!

I'd tend to disagree @Flipaisimo. Although it is extremely interesting what you say about the sadness, I didn't realise such emotion was rife, and speaking as a Londoner, I appreciated the video as a depiction of a positive-looking battle. We need to learn from Madrid's Tahrir Square!

Sorry Ed, I didnt mean "crying" but "shouting"! And yes, it was highly positive!!

Hello Flipaisimo, i tend to agree with you about the fact that the video doesnt show that much of those shoutings and protests on people faces, but i actually tried to show it in another way, more with rythm of image and with increasing sound. :)

I agree about differences between 15-M and 15-O because I was there both days, and precisely what I do think is that people were much more confident during 15-O, because the movement had already a long way done, and that is one of the things we wanted to show. Of course it would have been great to show more people, but we weren't able in such a short video (There was material enough to create an entire film that day!)
