‘What did the Germans actually laugh about, before Loriot came along? Nothing at all,’ muses the German daily newspaper, the taz. ‘Loriot’ is the French word for the golden oriole, a bird known colloquially in German as the Bülow bird - Loriot’s real name was Vicco von Bülow. Perhaps he was a cousin of the mockingbird, the bird which somehow manages to fill every pair of shoes. Whether as caricaturist, director, actor, musician, professor, friendly neighbour, husband, father, grandfather, or onstage, on television, in radio or in private life… Let’s keep it short: there is only one Loriot! Vicco von Bülow died on 22 August 2011 at the ripe old age of 87. (Pictured, the character of a talking dog he created, ‘Bum’)
