Roberto Saviano 'Beauty and Inferno' conquers EU

Roberto Saviano’s ‘Beauty and the Inferno’ wins Europe book prize 2010

Roberto Saviano: Camorra is a ‘European problem’, by cafebabel.com

The Italian interview-based television show Vieni Via Con Me (‘Come Away With Me’) featuring the Italian writer has been a massive success despite ‘bureaucratic hitches’  (the channel RAI didn’t want an official contract with Saviano) and the polemic arising out of his statement that the mafia exists in the north of Italy. Now Roberto Saviano has picked up another award, namely the Europe book prize 2010. On 8 December the Neapolitan journalist and writer picked up the gong at the European parliament of Brussels alongside Finnish writer Sofi Oksanen who won the category for ‘best novel’ with ‘Purge’. ‘Beauty and the Inferno’ evokes Saviano’s time in hiding and other contemporary writers who risked their lives between 2004 and 2009 for the truth. Excerpts have been published by some national media outlets, so here’s a flashback to when cafebabel.com met the man in an exclusive from 2007
