Nazi propaganda music: Pete Doherty inches ‘closer’ to his German fans

The British lead singer of Babyshambles sang the Deutschlandlied (‘Deutschland, Deutschland, above all’) during a secret gig at Munich’s On3 festival at the end of November - and was booed offstage by his German fans. The Nazis used to use the first verse as propaganda, whilst the German national hymn only uses the third verse today. Apparently ‘Doherty wanted to be close to his fans’, according to manager Adrian Hunter. Maybe next time crowd surfing might be the answer
