OPINION european elections 2009 : Calling Europe’s anarchist class 2008-2009: no need to smash bank windows

Calling Europe’s anarchist class 2008-2009: no need to smash bank windows

Today, anarchy has nothing to offer the public; a five-year-old sat in McDonalds could think of a better way to govern the people. Those that push it – the protesters on Europe's streets, as most popularly depicted in the media - are merely self-serving fools who ignore what democracy has done for us, and who are driven by some sort of warped fantasy of idyllic life

Rise of the far-right in Europe

Rise of the far-right in Europe

As a grouping, it's complex and divided, but they gained ground in the last elections. Whether populist or islamophobic, these nationalist parties won seats among the ranks of the eurosceptics in the European parliament; 8 MPs for the Lega Nord, 3 for the Hungarian Jobbik, 4 for Geert Wilders' PVV, 2 for the British BNP. These neo-fascists have harnessed the web to gather large followings and create a media buzz. What does democracy have to say for itself?

Iran's colourful presidentials: Facebook, fights and first wives

A week earlier, the EU campaigned to mobilise voters for the European parliamentary elections. Opposition candidates know that a similar effort may be their only chance of beating the incumbent in the Iranian presidentials. Iran's campaign officially rounds up as former PM, military chief and mullah go up against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 12 June. Overview

EU? To the back, turn right

EU? To the back, turn right

The EU parliament shapes 75% of EU laws. Between 4 and 7 June 2009, it saw its social democrats left-wing fall out whilst the centre-right went deep in elections across the 27 countries of the EU. Up in the stands, a fragment of the vote went to the parties who are critical of the European system. 56.5% of the audience was full of abstainers; some of the EU's 375 million voters were probably home watching TV on election night, which gained record audiences for events other than election coverage. Since the first EU elections took place in 1979, we're seeing a record loser turnout. Reflections

EU elections: why Europe has been loyal to the right

Tepid, failed third-way socialism: with 267 out of 736 seats, the European people’s party (EPP) have won the elections for the third consecutive time in a row. Only the ruling socialist and liberal parties have felt a kinf of ‘punishment vote’ inspired by dealings of the crisis. The greens and the nationalists have taken advantage of the discontent engulfing European politics

Europe has voted: so what's the trend?

From 4 - 7 June 2009 the citizens of the 27 EU member states cast their votes for a new European parliament. The voter turnout was relatively low, but the trends are clear to see. In many countries right-wing parties gained a larger share of the vote while national governments were punished. The press in Holland, Poland, Italy, Finland, Austria and Hungary speak

Giovanni di Lorenzo: 'the values which inspired the creation of the EU are pathetic today'

We  speak to an Italian born in Sweden, raised in Rome, who moved to Hannover aged eleven, speaking little German. Today he is the director of German weekly Die Zeit, co-editor of Der Tagesspiegel, author of a bestseller and a TV presenter. Analysis of the European election results

By Richard Laming, Federal Union The European election results were bad news for pro-Europeans. There’s no point trying to present it any other way. One trick that party politicians sometimes try and play is to say that the turnout was down, which means that you can’t read so ...

Slovenia | Conflict with Croatia

Slovenia's European election campaign missed any European aspects stated an Austrian newspaper. As in other member states, the financial crisis was a big deal. Moreover, unsolved border issues with Croatia dominated, as usual, the discussions. These problems are not well known within the EU, but postponed accession talks with ...
