Europarl TV: 'technology is more fast-paced than the institutions'

In September 2008, the TV channel started streaming parliamentary sessions and news features on MEPs and their speeches on the European parliament’s webpage. The challenge is to give the institutions a human face - press service chief Jean-Yves Loog tells us how

Internet: 'the great anarchist event' no longer ours to 'control'

When Irish telecommunications company Eircom blocked customer access to the Pirate Bay in September, you could almost hear a faint, sardonic chuckle erupt from internet users all over the world. As Britain and France impose their own legislation to cut off internet access for filesharing offenders, the EU parliament and commission hold talks to formalise their positions on 4 November

A seat in the European Parliament; a snake or a ladder?

Today you won’t find EU politicians hammering on the doors of the European Parliament, especially if they dream of becoming heavyweights in national politics. There are still some politicians keen to be MEPs, however, but their motives aren’t always what they seem...

EU? To the back, turn right

EU? To the back, turn right

The EU parliament shapes 75% of EU laws. Between 4 and 7 June 2009, it saw its social democrats left-wing fall out whilst the centre-right went deep in elections across the 27 countries of the EU. Up in the stands, a fragment of the vote went to the parties who are critical of the European system. 56.5% of the audience was full of abstainers; some of the EU's 375 million voters were probably home watching TV on election night, which gained record audiences for events other than election coverage. Since the first EU elections took place in 1979, we're seeing a record loser turnout. Reflections

ANALYSIS european parliament : The Europe-shaped hole in the Polish campaign for June elections

The Europe-shaped hole in the Polish campaign for June elections

Obviously, this is not a country-specific phenomenon, but a pan-European one. What is not typical is the lack of any debate between the main political parties, even on domestic issues. The ruling party and the main opposition party seem to be focused exclusively on the names that supposedly ensure the highest possible score

We now have the statement by Mr. Barroso and by the legal services of the European Parliament on the supposed conflict of interests of the Bulgarian commissioner designate, Rumiana Jeleva. As I have promised, now I should deliver my own opinion on her candidature.

Analysis of the European election results

By Richard Laming, Federal Union The European election results were bad news for pro-Europeans. There’s no point trying to present it any other way. One trick that party politicians sometimes try and play is to say that the turnout was down, which means that you can’t read so ...
