Berlin wall: version Vilnius 2009
Nostalgic? Nearly two decades after ‘die Wende’, as the Germans call it, the Lithuanian capital has become the EU capital of culture. In 2009 though, it is still fighting its old demons. Russian symbols have been erased without mercy. A cold soviet wind blows through the Baltic republic with regards to energy. Belarusian students find exile in a special university four hours from Minsk. The domestic brain drain is ongoing. Three journalists plus one photographer and one videomaker (see below) hunt the clash of cultures in our monthly cities stop: 'EU Debate on the ground'
Eurocorps in Strasbourg: is it really a European military with no UK participation?
Strasbourg is home to the most European of all HQs; the Eurocorps headquarters. Born 15 years ago, this army corps is the sole military organisation governed by an international treaty. So, are the Eurocorps a sign of Europe’s powerful defence force? Opinions are divided in the Alsatian region capital

‘Vovis' versus ‘gorrillas’: tackling precarity in Seville
They’ll find you parking spots for a little loose change. This form of begging in disguise allows the poorest members of society to make themselves a few hundred euros a month. Despite its large-scale growth in the Andalusian capital, the phenomenon is becoming a headache for the authorities

Prague between devil, sea or EU?
The Czech capital is adapting to its new position in Europe and the world in a period of zigzag lines. The economic crisis awakens fantasies of protectionism, the country's six-month EU presidency reigns in popular euroscepticism, there are immigration regulations even when there are no more foreigners to kick out and US president Obama doesn't know if he will pin the anti-missile shield on the Czech map. Which way is the Czech Republic going? Three journalists, a video maker and a photographer from the cafebabel.com network feature in this month's 'cities' mission, named 'EUdebate on the Ground'
Is Hungary ready for same-sex unions?
Although four EU countries have already agreed to legalise homosexual marriage, Budapest, despite having initially given it the green light, has rejected the legislation. Now Hungary, and the 10% of its population who live with a long- term partner, are awaiting the national and European elections for an answer

It's not all so fine in Sofia
With the European elections on the horizon, our monthly reporting trek - this time to Bulgaria - brings vote buying to the fore. Whilst the energy problem looms as a wider priority, we focus on the citizens themselves - be they migrants coming back home to look for refuge during the crisis, the omnipresent Turkish minority or the Balkan jazz lovers. After Tallinn, Paris, Clermont-Ferrand and Berlin, four journalists and one photographer from our network explore the fifth stop in cafebabel.com's 'cities' mission, 'EUdebate on the Ground'
REACH: inflammable regulation on chemical products
After years of debate, the REACH regulation came into force in June 2007, revolutionising the chemical product market in Europe. It is now up to manufacturers to prove a product is safe prior to its distribution

Twenty years on: why Berlin is not Germany
The city buzzes with cultural events to commemorate the reunification of Berlin and the European continent. But how do the protagonists of the change view each other - whether they are born after 1990, are pre-1990 migrants or modern-day visitors?

99% of European businesses are SMEs
The 'enterprise Europe network' (EEN) logo is becoming more familiar to entrepreneurs. It is not a sponsor or a multinational but rather a network created by the European commission

Cities: Clermont-Ferrand boils
Nestled in the centre of France, the 'Michelin city' is darkened by its volcanic hinterland. Protests against the Bologna education reforms - brought in by Europe - simmer within, whilst protests against Brussels’ liberalism spew from young farmers of the Auvergne region. Would the socialists have a solution? After all, they have been in power in the city since the second world war. The reform seismometer may just erupt at the European elections in June 2009. After Tallinn and Paris, four journalists and one photographer from our network explore the third stop in cafebabel.com's monthly 'cities' mission, 'EUdebate on the Ground'
