Cleared for take-off

October 31, 2008 Three weeks after NATO’s informal defense ministerial concluded in Budapest, residents of the Hungarian capital can no longer blame the delegations that descended on the city for congestion on the roads – and the Alliance is moving forward on many of the topics addressed by the ministers. Hungary celebrated the 52nd anniversary of the 1956 revolution

October 23, 2008 On October 23, many Hungarians, all around the country, commemorated their compatriots who fought in the anti-Soviet revolution in 1956. A total of 485 events took place throughout the county. Senior government officials laid wreaths at key sites of the revolution and at the memorial in a public cemetery where martyrs of the revolution were buried in unmarked graves. Similarly to the last two years, anti-government, mostly far right demonstrators also held their own rallies, but significantly less people participated at their programs this year. In contrast to last year, the events went peacefully and there were no clashes between the police and the far right groups. On the blog budapest.

4,000-5,000 joined the civil march of "Tarka Magyar" for non-violence

October 4, 2008 Various civil groups decided to organize a demonstration called "Tarka Magyar" ("Diverse Hungarian") to commemorate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the International Day of Non-Violence. Organizers hoped the demonstration would be the "biggest non-partisan demonstration since the fall of communism", but turn-out fell far short of the expected 100,000 people. Eventually, some 4,000-5,000 people joined the march that ran through downtown Budapest on Saturday afternoon to protest against discrimination and violence and support tolerance. Hungary apologizes for its role in crushing the "Prague Spring"

August 29, 2008 President of Hungary László Sólyom expressed his “deep regret” over Hungary’s role in the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Speaking outside the House of Terror Museum on the 40th anniversary of the Soviet Bloc invasion of Czechoslovakia, Sólyom said that although the intervention was implemented by sheer force rather than by the will of the people, that does not exonerate Hungarians from responsibility. “We have something to be ashamed of,” he declared. “Twelve years after the Soviet army attacked Hungary and crushed the Hungarian revolution in a bloody war, Hungary's political regime put the country in the position of attacking another nation that wanted more freedom.” “Making an apology can remove a thorn,” Sólyom remarked, “if we make it obvious that we reassess the former events, if we pronounce the truth and if we restore justice.” On the blog budapest.

Hungary is holding a referendum on Sunday

March 2, 2008 The main opposition party Fidesz and its ally the Christian Democrat Party (KDNP) initiated a referendum one and a half year ago on banning tuition, visiting and daily hospital fees. Due to the long official procedures, the referendum is scheduled to be held only on Sunday, March 9. According to the opposition, the so call "social referendum" represents the rejection of the government’s “reform rampage”, including the major heath care reform. Fidesz also claims that a successful referendum will be symbolic and “could mark a new political era. Prime Minister Gyurcsány insists though that the referendum will not affect the essence of the reforms and that parliamentary elections were not due until 2010, so the outcome was immaterial. First Hungarian-Austrian water quality test completed on Raba river

September 30, 2008 Despite the changes in leadership at the Hungarian Ministry of Environment and Water Protection the bilateral negotiations regarding the foaming of the river Raba, which has for long been a dispute between Hungary and Austria, are seems to remain on the right track. The first comprehensive test initiated by Hungary and conducted jointly by Hungarian and Austrian experts on the water quality of the river Raba has been completed and shows that the concentration of pollutants is higher on the Austrian side due to the activities of local tanning facilities.
