Are we all nuclear again?
Italy plans to build new nuclear power plants with the help of France. Sweden just put an end to their phase-out policy and Swedish Vattenfall is now one of Europe’s leading nuclear energy producers. Spanish head of government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and German chancellor Angela Merkel are under pressure to reconsider a rejection of nuclear power. Is nuclear power the future of energy?
1. Europe needs an independent power supply. For the moment there’s no way around nuclear energy.
2. Energy companies are afraid of new technologies because they put their monopoly into question. European governments should continue the nuclear phase-out.
3. We have to cope with climate change, economic competitiveness and the security of energy supplies. We must have a balanced energy mix.
