In the framework of our editorial mission Green Europe on the Ground , cafebabel.com is sending 40 young journalists, photographers, photojournalists or videomakers 'on the ground'. The aim is to uncover the most innovative initiatives defining a city in our 'green Europe'. We're all fighting climate change!

Paris: the green at the end of the tunnel

Paris is like a tunnel which threatens to devour everything, a pressure cooker ready to explode. The city has the densest population in Europe: 21,000 people per square kilometre. Worn out by an insatiable demand for accommodation, a jam-packed metro and trees wilting due to pollution, the Parisians are eager for change. Citizens have already rolled up their sleeves (literally!) and are creating new green spaces. With shared gardens, honey, biodiversity and public politics transforming the city, Paris aspires to transform velibs into autolibs, to develop new trains and to listen again and again to the lectures of the ecolo-geeks. Joly’s race for the candidature this spring was monopolised by a handful of eco-geeks, who grasped before anyone else that the internet could be the key to the election campaign. AutoLibs: automatic cars to eat Paris from October 2011

You can take a double-decker in London, a yellow cab in New York, but taking a blue car in the French capital isn’t quite there yet. The City of Lights aims to strengthen its image at being greener than ever before with a few hundred AutoLibs or ‘automatic liberties’ to be launched in October 2011

FOCUS The life of a busy urban bee on a Parisian roof

The life of a busy urban bee on a Parisian roof

From the roofs of the Opera Garnier to the gardens of Luxembourg, it’s easy to find honeycombs and beehives in Paris. The French capital’s honey taste better and is healthier than the honey from the countryside, which is infected by the pesticides used upon it. Citizens came together to maintain the urban biodiversity
