The Early Bird Catches the Worm by Francesco Patierno has been chosen in official competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival (July 4-12). Released in Italy at the end of February by Medusa, the film centres on a young radio DJ (Elio Germano) consumed by an addiction to gambling (the story is based on Marco Baldini’s autobiographical novel Il giocatore – see news).
This will be Patierno’s second time at Karlovy Vary – in 2003 he was part of the festival’s Variety’s Critics’ Choice selection with Pater Familias.

That same year, Ferzan Ozpetek competition title Facing Windows won the Crystal Globe for Best Film and awards for Best Director and Best Actress (Giovanna Mezzogiorno).

This year, Variety’s Critics’ Choice features another Italian film, Lascia perdere Johnny ,the feature debut by actor Fabrizio Bentivoglio.
