by Rania Kalapoda Alonissos is located in the Aegean Sea, a lush island in the Northern Sporades. A quiet and peaceful island, perfect for nature lovers and those seeking a quiet and relaxing holiday on a Greek island. Thesouthern part is more popular gathering more people while the north is barren and rocky.

  To visit Alonissos you should get  the ferry boat from Kimi Evias (2 hours and 15 minutes), from Agios Konstantinos (4 hours) or from Volos (5 hours). Summer routes are regular while you can use the links from the port of Thessaloniki. You can also use speedboat, which also has regular and frequent servicefrom the port of Volos (2 hours and 30 minutes) or Agios Konstantinos (2 hours and 40 minutes).

  In case you are not going to have with you your car, it is necessary to rent a car or bike on the island because there is only one bus and only a few taxis available.

  Getting to Alonissos by ferry or speedboat will get you off to Patitiri. It is the seaport of the island and also its capital. Just north of the harbor, you will find two beautiful settlements Rousoum-Yialos and Votsi, which are located 1 km from the port of Patitiri. In these three villages you will find plenty of apartments and hotels to book your stay. The majority of tourism is found in these areas and  there you will find a lot of hotels, rooms, restaurants, supermarkets and generally all the possible services you may need.

  The old village which called Chora of Alonissos has many cottages and attracts a lot of tourists as it offers quaint traditional rooms for your stay. In Chora you will find the absolute quiet which in recent years has slightly declined since the move has increased significantly. The town is the old capital city, located on a hilltop, where you can have an overall view on all points of the compass. It has an airy and cool climate, so on summer months is full of life.

  Alonissos has very beautiful beaches which visitors can reach by road or boats.

  Just north of the port Patitiri you will meet plenty of beaches with crystal waters. Milia is a beach with tropical colors, amazing waters that previously were not regulated. But now you can find a canteen, umbrellas, sun beds and listen to lively music. The Chrisi Milia is also a nice getaway because you will be astonished by its blue waters., the beach has been visited by many people and seen by many as the best beach on the island. A few kilometers from Patitiri you will find an equally beautiful beach which is called Kokkinokastro. It is organized and can be reached by vehicle or boat. In this area you can do camping as well.

  Before you get off the beach TzortziGialos, stand on the side and marvel this beautiful bay with amazing colors. It's really a dream! Then start the downhill and in a few minutes you will see a unique beach. The shallow waters and the sandy seabed makes it more suitable for children. But it is not regulated so it is desirable to take provisions for shade and for whatever else you might need.

  In Lefto-Gialos you will find white pebbles, turquoise waters and a virgin pine forest. All these together make an unforgettable image. The scenery is so beautiful that many people visit on day trips from nearby islands.

  In recent years the Megalos Mourtias has become a very popular beach, mainly due to the great sea that you meet there. On the other hand, the little Mourtias is a bay with sand and pebbles in the southwestern part of the island. It is a quiet beach with calm clear waters. There is no bar or canteen so be sure to have your water supplies. By car you can reach the beach only by one dirt road, or better with a boat. Do not be surprised if you find there  few supporters of nudism. They prefer this beach because it is desolate and not organized.

  At Alonissos you can find many tavernas where you can enjoy your food after your bath. Do not forget to enjoy the local wine and cheese pie of Skopelos, which is freshly baked thet time you order it. Another specialty is the astakomanestra, a pasta dish made ​​with fresh lobster. Finally, definitely try the nut cake, which is famous on the island.

  At Patitiri you will find the tavern "Akrogiali" which is famous for its quality in service and food all these years running.The next is “Akti” Ouzo-Tavern, decorated in the 70s, where you can enjoy authentic local dishes. Do not forget to try them as pure products are traditionally their own production and processed without any marketability.

  At Chora you can also find traditional tavernas, in a warm and friendly atmosphere. On the beach Votsi you will have the opportunity to dine in an old and historic tavern, called "Mouria". The traditional flavors from Mrs. Magdalene will carry you away as you dine by the sea.

  In the small village “Kalamakia” you will find taverns, literally on the beach, where you can enjoy fresh fish and lobster with pasta. The tavern "Manolis" in Agnanti hotel has been for many years the reference point for lovers of fine cuisine. You'll find panoramic views, great cuisine, family atmosphere and excellent service. We recommend you visit the Tavern "Tzortzi Gialos" which is at the beach Tzortzi Gialos. The owners will make you feel like home, serving homemade food.

  The sea around Alonissos is extremely clean, which justifies the fact that there is a National Marine Park that protects endangered species like the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus-Monachus, who lives in the sea caves of the region and you can see in the northern part of the island if you are lucky. The marine park was first established in Greece in 1992 and aims to protect the monk seal and the overall protection of flora and fauna. The Park is an enclosed area. This is an extensive nature reserve, perhaps the most extensive marine area in the Mediterranean. The philosophy of the Park is to protect the ecosystem along with the growth of Alonissos from any violent interventions. You should definitely visit the marine park and if you're lucky you'll see dolphins, seals, turtles in one of the excursions organized by local boats.

  Also interesting is to make a trip to the “Laografiko Mousio” in Patitiri, as there you will see many artifacts from all periods.

  Finally, for those who love walking, there's a paved path that leads from the harbor in the old village in 30 minutes. One of the most beautiful moments of the village is the celebration of August 15th, where representation of traditional marriage is been organized.

  In Kokkinokastro is the important archaeological site of Alonissos and here was the ancient city of the island, Ikos. The bottom of the beach is one of the most interesting to gaze using your mask.

  Finally, you should definitely enjoy the sunset from the church of Agios Onoufrios. There you will have the opportunity to have spectacular panoramic views. While the sun leans back from the mountains of Pilion, the colors of the horizon will amaze you.

  Alonissos island is definitely not for crazy parties!! But you can find bars with good music and good cocktails by the sea.
