Standing on a popular bridge in Midzyzdroje, I noticed two Polish tourists staring across the border with a telescope at Pomeranian Bay. They stood scrutinizing their German counterparts. It was almost as if Poland had not yet joined the EU and they were observing how these ‘other’ Europeans were spending their holidays. They couldn’t believe that beyond the border these holiday-makers led very mundane and normal lives.
