Awards and distinctions

cafebabel.com and its journalists have received Europe-wide recognition for its work as a European media, and for its efforts to promote a European public opinion.

  • logo Council of Europe. In February 2004, the non-governmental association (NGO) Babel International obtained consultative status at the Council of Europe.
  • logo prix de l'initiative europeene In June 2004, Cafebabel.com received the ‘European Initiative Prize', awarded by the European Press Club, the European Parliament and the House of Europe, Paris.

The following year, in 2008, English editor and French community editor Nabeelah Shabbir and Jean-Sebastien Lefevbre won the titles of 'European Young Journalists of the Year' for the UK and France respectively for their reports on urban youth and language barriers in Kosovo Read their articles here and here here. They took prizes in the first edition of this competition organised by the European commission's enlargement directorate-general In 2008 the association which runs cafebabel.com, the Strasbourg-based Babel International, picked up the 'Golden Star 2008' citizenship project award from the education and culture directorate general of the European commission In 2008 cafebabel.com also proudly beat the likes of The Financial Times and French journalist Jean Quatremer to win the European agenda award for 'political journalist of the year'; this was the year that we launched our second spin-off website devoted to the European elections, 'EUdebate' In 2009 the 'European Young Journalists of the Year' for Ireland and France were cafebabel.com writers Anna Patton, who wrote about Turkey in the EU, and Elif Kayi In 2010 the 'European Young Journalists of the Year' for the UK, France and Ireland are two former cafebabel.com editors, Clea Caulcutt and Prune Antoine, and journalist Ange Steen In 2011 former French editor of cafebabel.com, Emmanuel Haddad from France, won the European parliament's Freedom of the Press Award 2011. He visited Montenegro where he scrutinised the problematic field of journalists’ rights In January 2012 cafebabel.com won the prestigious United Nations civilisation of Alliances/ BMW group award in Doha, Qatar, for its flagship project 'Europe on the ground' In April 2012 cafebabel.com scooped the German 'Civismedia' award for online journalism portals in Berlin, Germany
